DE YOUNG

Whilst in San Francisco I took a trip to the de Young Fine Arts Museum to view the exhibition of Jean Paul Gaultier. I was extremely happy that I made it there in time as I caught the exhibition on its last day! After the two hour queue, I finally got escorted into the exhibition which was very crowded.. I got the chance to take some images, however they are not to the best quality so I do apologise. The exhibition was truly amazing. It took you through his life,  starting from were he started working for Pierre Cardin at the beginning of his career, up-to showcasing 140 of his exquisite designs from many different collections. The dynamic use of multimedia was what made this exhibition stand out from any other I have seen, with fashion photographs, video clips, and the 30 animated mannequins who spoke and sang to the audience.

After the I had walked through the exhibition, I went into the media room were I watched a short film on Gaultier and his team on the run up to one of his Couture shows. The one thing I now strongly appreciate is the craftsmanship that goes into every single one of these designs. For example, the leopard dress, known as "Leopard skin" (second image) was all hand beaded with individual rhinestones, taking a time of 1,006 hours to complete ... truly incredible.
